What does the science actually say about ginger?
Ginger has been used in kitchens and medicine chests across the region for centuries, but what matters here is what controlled research on human beings has found. The strongest evidence concerns nausea. A comprehensive systematic review published in the journal Nutrients in 2020 looked at 109 randomised controlled trials and confirmed that ginger genuinely reduces nausea across several settings.
The evidence is particularly solid for pregnancy nausea. A 2022 meta-analysis covering 12 clinical trials found ginger significantly better than placebo for first-trimester nausea and vomiting, and roughly comparable to vitamin B6 but without B6's side effects. For chemotherapy-related nausea and for post-operative nausea the evidence is good, though results are more mixed and ginger is best thought of as an add-on to standard antiemetics rather than a replacement.
For joint pain, a 2024 randomised controlled trial published in Food and Function found that steamed ginger extract significantly improved pain and function in mild osteoarthritis of the knee compared with placebo. This is encouraging, though the trial was short and not yet replicated widely. Ginger for joint pain is promising rather than proven at the same level as nausea.

Is ginger tea at home enough to make a difference?
The doses used in positive trials typically run from 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams of ginger powder daily, or standardised extracts giving equivalent amounts of active compounds. This is roughly what you get from one to two cups of tea made with a full teaspoon of freshly grated ginger, or from standardised capsules.
Commercial ginger tea bags usually contain much smaller amounts of ginger, often just flavouring rather than a therapeutic dose. This does not mean home ginger tea has no value at all, but your expectations should be realistic. For mild nausea in early pregnancy many women find it genuinely helpful. For a measurable effect on joint inflammation you are unlikely to reach the threshold through casual tea drinking.
If you want to use ginger for a specific symptom, a standardised supplement with a clear milligram dose is more predictable than home preparation. And in pregnancy particularly, speak to your doctor before adding any supplement, even one as familiar as ginger.
What does the research actually say about turmeric?
Turmeric has attracted enormous attention over the past two decades as an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-ageing agent. Much of this enthusiasm runs well ahead of the evidence. The active compound is curcumin, which does have real anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory and animal studies. The problem, and it is a significant one, is what happens when a person swallows it.
A landmark review published in Molecular Pharmaceutics set out the bioavailability problem clearly. Curcumin is poorly soluble in water, breaks down rapidly in the intestine, and reaches the bloodstream in very small quantities after a standard oral dose. Studies measuring blood levels after giving people ordinary curcumin supplements have found concentrations far too low to produce the effects seen in cell culture experiments.
Research has moved towards enhanced formulations that combine curcumin with piperine from black pepper, or use lipid-based or nanoparticle delivery to improve absorption. These do raise blood curcumin levels substantially. The problem is that most commercial turmeric products on pharmacy and health shop shelves are not using these technologies, so the label claims may significantly exceed what actually reaches your tissues.
Does turmeric help with inflammation and joint pain?
Human trials using enhanced-absorption curcumin formulations have produced encouraging results for osteoarthritis pain. A 2017 review in the journal Foods concluded that curcumin shows meaningful anti-inflammatory effects but cautioned that the trials are mostly small and short. The honest summary is that it may help with mild joint pain when the formulation is designed to actually reach the bloodstream, but the evidence is not strong enough to recommend it over established treatments.
What turmeric does not have is proof that it treats cancer in people. Dozens of laboratory studies have shown curcumin killing cancer cell lines in dishes, and this is genuinely interesting science. But the gap between a cell dying in a dish and a compound curing cancer in a person is enormous, and no clinical trial in humans has established turmeric as a treatment for any cancer. People who delay surgery or chemotherapy because they are taking turmeric are taking a serious risk based on a misunderstanding of what lab studies mean.
If you are taking turmeric for joint pain and notice improvement, that is worth tracking. But if you see no change after several weeks, the most likely explanation is that the curcumin in your product is not being absorbed in meaningful quantities. This is not a reason to increase the dose; it is a reason to discuss your joint pain with a doctor.
The warning nobody mentions: blood thinning
This is the most medically significant aspect of both herbs, and the least discussed. Ginger inhibits platelet aggregation, meaning it slows the blood's ability to clot. A study published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine found that ginger amplified the effect of the blood pressure drug nifedipine on platelet function in both healthy volunteers and hypertensive patients.
A 2021 systematic review in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology identified ginger as one of the herbal substances with documented interactions with warfarin, with the potential to raise bleeding risk. Turmeric shares this property, though its effect is generally weaker. The interaction is real and has been reported in case studies of unexpected bleeding in people taking warfarin alongside ginger supplements.
Anyone taking warfarin, clopidogrel, aspirin at therapeutic doses, newer anticoagulants like rivaroxaban or apixaban, or who is scheduled for surgery within two weeks should tell their doctor about any concentrated ginger or turmeric supplements they are taking. Cooking with these spices at normal culinary amounts does not carry the same risk, but the concentrated supplements many people take for health reasons absolutely do.
Is ginger safe in pregnancy?
Ginger is one of the few herbs actually studied in pregnant women, which gives it an advantage over most folk remedies. The evidence supports its use at moderate doses for nausea in the first trimester and it is generally considered safe at culinary amounts throughout pregnancy.
The caution comes with high doses. Large amounts of concentrated ginger extract show antiplatelet activity, and there is theoretical concern about using high-dose supplements close to the time of delivery. There are not enough data to guarantee the safety of high-dose concentrated supplements in pregnancy.
If you are pregnant and suffering from nausea that does not respond to simple measures like eating small frequent meals and avoiding strong smells, ginger is a reasonable first step and one supported by clinical evidence. Discuss it with your obstetrician, particularly if you plan to use capsules rather than tea.

Including ginger and turmeric as regular parts of cooking is safe, beneficial as part of a healthy diet overall, and carries no particular risk at culinary amounts. The concern is with concentrated supplements marketed with exaggerated health claims.

Claims that go beyond the evidence

These claims draw on early-stage laboratory research and extrapolate far beyond what the evidence supports. Social media and commercial websites routinely present preliminary findings as if they were established treatments, and people make decisions accordingly.
The distinction worth holding onto is this: a compound showing activity against cancer cells in a laboratory dish is genuinely interesting science. It is not the same as a treatment for cancer in a living person. The path from one to the other requires years of further research, and most candidates fail somewhere along it. Many compounds that look impressive in laboratory dishes fail at the very first human trial because the body handles them differently from a glass dish.
Ginger for nausea is reasonably well established. Curcumin for inflammation is promising but not conclusive. Anything beyond that is marketing territory, not medicine. If you have a condition that needs treatment, use treatments that have been tested in the kind of research that answers that question, and let your doctor know what supplements you are taking alongside.
When to see a doctor rather than managing with supplements
If you are using ginger for nausea and it is not working well enough, that is a signal to see a doctor. Persistent nausea has many causes, some of which need treatment, and a few of which are urgent. Severe vomiting in pregnancy that stops you keeping fluids down, called hyperemesis gravidarum, requires medical treatment and sometimes admission to hospital. Ginger alone will not be enough.
If you are using turmeric for joint pain, the important question is whether you have had a diagnosis for that pain. Untreated inflammatory arthritis, for example, can cause permanent joint damage even when pain is partially controlled by a supplement. A rheumatologist can assess whether the pain is mechanical or inflammatory and advise on treatment that actually modifies the disease, not only the symptom.
Unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding from small cuts, blood in the urine or stools, or any episode of significant unexpected bleeding while taking concentrated supplements of either herb should prompt a visit to a doctor that same day. These can be signs that the blood-thinning effect is stronger than expected, particularly if you are also on anticoagulant medication.
